PAINTINGS FOR THE LOBBY OF SCRIPPS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
ENCINITAS, CALIFORNIA

COURAGE 6’ x 26’

It took great courage to place the first brushstroke on 26 feet of canvas—each layer of gesso, red, and yellow blending into a warm, ivory backdrop. This piece, created in 1995, was meant to live in harmony with the soft peach tones of the walls at Scripps Hospital. Over the years, the walls have evolved, now dressed in a tranquil beige after two thoughtful remodels of the lobby.

Just like the title of the painting, it takes courage to step into a hospital and to trust in the path of healing. It takes confidence to choose the right doctor and the right team. And, in that same spirit, it takes the courage to embrace healing itself—an art form of patience, resilience, and grace.
